Business Operations & Growth

Bracketing (or size bracketing) is when customers deliberately order multiple sizes or variants of the same product with the intent of returning those that don't fit. It's common in fashion and footwear. Swap's returns intelligence helps brands identify these patterns and adjust policies accordingly.

DDP (Delivered Duty Paid) means the seller covers all duties, taxes, and import charges, the customer pays nothing extra on delivery. DDU (Delivered Duty Unpaid) means the customer is responsible for any duties or taxes at the border. Swap supports DDP shipping with guaranteed landed cost calculations.

A resale certificate (also called a seller's permit or tax exemption certificate) is required in most US states to purchase goods for resale without paying sales tax. Whether you need one to sell online depends on your state and business model most ecommerce sellers do need a resale certificate to purchase wholesale inventory tax-free. Check your state's requirements directly or consult a tax advisor.

VATable sales are computed by taking the total sales and separating them into VAT-inclusive amounts. If your price includes VAT: VATable amount = Total ÷ (1 + VAT rate). For example, for a 20% VAT rate: £120 total ÷ 1.20 = £100 VATable sales, £20 VAT. If your price is VAT-exclusive, multiply by the VAT rate to calculate the VAT amount to add.

To increase ecommerce sales: optimise product discovery (search, recommendations, AI-assisted shopping), reduce checkout friction, implement exchange-first returns to retain revenue, expand internationally to reach new markets, and use demand forecasting to ensure you're never out of stock on your best sellers. Swap supports all of these levers from Agentic Storefront for discovery through Global for international expansion and Inventory for stock optimisation.

For a holiday marketing campaign, plan 8–12 weeks in advance: define your promotional calendar, segment your audience (new vs. returning customers, high-value vs. one-time purchasers), create targeted offers (gift guides, bundle deals, free shipping thresholds), and ensure your returns policy is prominently communicated for gifting scenarios. Swap's exchange-first returns are particularly valuable during the holiday season when gift fit issues drive return volume.

To scale an ecommerce business, focus on: international expansion (new markets = new revenue without new product development), operational automation (returns, fulfilment, compliance at scale), AI-powered discovery and conversion, and demand forecasting to support growth without proportional inventory risk. Swap is purpose-built for DTC brands scaling globally providing the infrastructure for international expansion, returns at scale, and AI commerce.

To use virtual assistants for supply chain optimisation, deploy AI agents that monitor inventory levels, track supplier performance, flag anomalies in delivery timelines, and generate replenishment recommendations. Swap's Inventory module provides the demand forecasting and replenishment intelligence layer, while Swap's agentic commerce infrastructure enables automation of the ordering and fulfilment workflow.

To scale retail sales without overburdening engineering, use no-code or low-code commerce tools that handle complex operations without custom development. Swap's platform is designed for exactly this: it provides advanced cross-border, returns, and inventory capabilities through a clean dashboard and pre-built Shopify integration no custom engineering required for most use cases.

Supplier platforms for sourcing help include: Faire (wholesale marketplace), Alibaba and Global Sources (international wholesale), and specialist sourcing agencies for specific product categories. Swap is not a sourcing platform, but its cross-border infrastructure helps brands who source internationally to manage the duty, tax, and compliance complexity of importing goods reducing the operational overhead of multi-country sourcing.

The most effective channels for conversational commerce include: on-site chat and AI shopping agents (Swap's Agentic Storefront), WhatsApp Business for markets where WhatsApp is dominant, Instagram DMs and messaging for discovery-to-purchase flows, and SMS for post-purchase updates and reengagement. Each channel serves different parts of the purchase journey.
