Right-size your boxes, don't ship small items in large boxes. Use void fill instead of larger containers. Consider poly mailers for soft goods. Custom packaging moulded to product shape reduces air space. Even small reductions in box dimensions can significantly reduce DIM weight charges across high volumes.

Every country has its own restricted and prohibited lists. For example, some countries restrict alcohol imports, others ban certain cosmetic ingredients, and some require specific labelling in local languages. What's freely sold in one market may be controlled in another. Research destination-country rules before expanding.

Dimensional weight (DIM weight) is a pricing method based on package volume rather than actual weight. Carriers charge whichever is greater: actual weight or DIM weight. Formula: L×W×H ÷ DIM factor (typically 5000 for cm or 139 for inches). Large, lightweight items are most affected. Smart packaging that minimises box size directly reduces DIM weight and shipping costs.

Common categories: hazardous materials, weapons, controlled substances, certain foods and agricultural products, some electronics, and items protected under CITES (endangered species products). Prohibited items cannot be imported at all; restricted items need licences or permits. Rules vary by country. Always check destination regulations before shipping.

Labels must include: complete sender and receiver addresses, detailed customs declarations, HS codes, country of origin, product descriptions, and declared value. Some countries require labels in local languages. The EU's GPSR may require specific safety labelling. Incorrect labelling causes rejection at customs.

International shipments must withstand longer transit times, more handling, and climate variations. Use double-walled boxes for fragile items. Ensure packages meet carrier size/weight limits. Labelling must include sender/receiver addresses, customs forms, and any required hazard markings. Eco-friendly packaging is increasingly expected, especially in European markets.

Consider: are they restricted/prohibited in target markets? Can they withstand longer shipping times? Are they price-competitive after adding duties and shipping? Do they need localisation (sizing, voltage, ingredients)? Products with high margins, lightweight packaging, and universal appeal are easiest to sell cross-border.
